Bert Haanstra – Alleman

Alleman is een Nederlandse documentaire uit 1963 in zwart-wit van Bert Haanstra. De film laat Nederland en zijn bewoners zien in hun dagelijks bestaan, vele verschillende levenswijzen worden op komische, maar ook serieuze wijze gefilmd. De documentaire wordt als uniek gezien, omdat hij vlak voor het ontstaan van de hippie-cultuur werd gemaakt. Net zoals de documentaire ‘Holland – Sex, Drugs and Democracy‘ geeft het een beeld weer van een Nederland uit vervlogen tijden.
De film is de best bezochte documentaire van Nederland, en een van de 10 best bezochte films in de Nederlandse cinema. Op 2 december 2007 werd Alleman tijdens het IDFA-festival uitgeroepen tot beste Nederlandse documentaire sinds 1945
Internationaal gezien won de documentaire diverse prijzen zoals een Gouden Beer op het filmfestival van Berlijn, Publieksfilm op het filmfestival van Adelaide, genomineerd voor een BAFTA-award en genomineerd voor een Oscar. Hij trok ook veel publieke belangstelling in het buitenland. De documentaire is ook bekend onder de titels Everyone, The Human Dutch, Zwölf Millionen. Simon Carmiggelt, die mede aan het verhaal schreef, doet de voice-over, voor de buitenlandse vertaling werd Peter Ustinov aangetrokken als voice-over.

Bert Haanstra became Holland’s leading filmmaker. His next feature, The Human Dutch, broke all previous records, even those set by The Brass Band. The Dutch flocked to the cinema that Christmas holiday in 1962 The Human Dutch paints a picture of the Dutch and pokes gentle fun at their peculiarities. As in Zoo, Haanstra and cameraman Anton van Munster filmed people as they unwittingly went about their business The basic idea was to show how people behave in specific situation or environment. But as people tend to be self-conscious in the presence of a camera, they concealed the camera in a huge shopping bag and hid their equipment in the shrubs. They built sheds with one way reflecting glass. In this film Haanstra observed the Dutch with compassion and wit and they emerged as people with a sense of sorrow and joy, religion and individualism and, above all, freedom.
Widely acclaimed abroad, The Human Dutch won a Golden Bear at the film festival in Berlin. Although its success was clearly important to Haanstra personally, it also signified the growth of a steady team. Anton van Munster was Haanstra’s cameraman. Anton Koolhaas worked on the scenarios and contributed advice and constructive criticism. The writer Simon Carmiggelt provided the text and additional commentary, which he wrote while Haanstra filmed. In this way a long and fruitful collaboration developed within the group.

Voor de liefhebbers is er ook een Bert Haanstra DVD Collectie. In deze unieke dvd-collectie is het verzamelde werk van Bert Haanstra bij elkaar gebracht, van het debuut De Muiderkring Herleeft (1949) tot en met de in opdracht van Unicef gemaakte documentaire Kinderen van Ghana (1988). Al met al is Bert Haanstra Compleet een passend monument voor een groot filmkunstenaar.
